Sicilian-American Flag

United States Flag icon
Sicilian-American Flag with USA-blue canton bearing a gold Archimedes spiral, a radiant gold cross, and a traditional gold Trinacria, over Palermo-red and white stripes

“A living faith, a vibrant culture, and the reason to endure—united under liberty.”

What the Flag Stands For

By joining the cross, the Trinacria, and the Archimedes spiral in one field, the canton becomes more than a single symbol. The fierce ancient face is balanced by the steady lines of the cross and the measured curve of the spiral—faith, culture, and reason in conversation. Together they speak of a Sicily where Christianity has endured since the days of Paul, where science flourished under Archimedes, and where both crossed the ocean with those who sought freedom and opportunity in America. Arranged in a loose triangle, the three devices quietly echo the island’s own three-caped form.

This banner unites four threads of Sicilian-American identity: ancient Christian roots, living culture, science and innovation, and American liberty. In the USA-blue canton, the traditional Trinacria—kept fully detailed—stands with a radiant Latin cross and an Archimedean spiral, all in gold. The field carries nine stripes in Palermo red and white, echoing the rhythm of the American flag while honoring Sicily’s historic provinces. For generations, Sicilians crossed the Atlantic seeking freedom and opportunity; the spiral also nods to the ingenuity and perseverance that powered that immigrant journey—ideas set in motion.

“We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days.” — Acts 28:12 (NABRE)

This early mention places Christianity in Sicily from the time of Paul; through centuries of conquest and renewal, it endures to the present.

How to Read This Flag (At a Glance)

In the canton, three equal elements — the cross, the traditional Trinacria, and Archimedes’ spiral — share the field in geometric and symbolic balance.

ElementWhat to SeeWhat it Means
Cross (gold) Radiant cross placed in the American canton Brings steadfast faith and points the way — its straight lines offering orientation against the Trinacria’s motion and the spiral’s curve.
Traditional Trinacria (gold) Unmistakable, fully detailed emblem Embodies Sicily’s motion and resilience — its three bent legs radiate energy between the cross’s steady lines and the spiral’s measured arc; together the three devices form a quiet triskelion echo of the island’s shape.
Archimedes’ spiral (gold) Precise geometric curve Represents reason and ingenuity — a measured, proportional arc that harmonizes the Trinacria’s motion with the cross’s straight lines, recalling Syracuse’s scientific legacy.
Palermo-red & white stripes Nine horizontal bands Clear American rhythm; honors Sicily’s nine provinces (see list below).

Nine Stripes — Nine Provinces

Each stripe stands for one of Sicily’s historic provinces, naming the whole island without crowding the field: Palermo, Messina, Catania, Agrigento, Trapani, Siracusa, Enna, Caltanissetta, and Ragusa.

Historical Texture

The palette recalls Sicily’s heraldic red and the luminous gold of mosaics in Monreale and Cefalù. The cross converses with cathedrals from Palermo to Ragusa, while the spiral invokes Syracuse’s scientific memory. The American layout acknowledges the Atlantic passage and the freedom to sustain faith, family, craft, and enterprise.
